Cambridge (Northern) Soul Festival 2: The Flirtations with The Signatures

Date:Fri 12 Nov
Time:7pm (doors)
Venue:J1 (standing show)
Price:£27.50 (adv)

The Flirtations (previously The Gypsies) are an all-female musical group who have recorded since the early 1960s. In late 1968 the trio signed with Deram Records and released what would become their signature recording: “Nothing But A Heartache” — a dense, dynamic, earth-shattering melodrama produced by Englishman Wayne Bickerton and written by Bickerton with Tony Waddington.

The Signatures are Ten musicians that have a passion for Northern Soul. We put our own expression to many classic and rare Northern Soul numbers and create a true balance between authentic and modern within our sound.

The Signatures have been fortunate enough to work with many original Northern Soul artists and so far have worked with and backed the following:
Tommy Hunt, Dean Parrish, Tobi Legend, Brenda Holloway, Spyder Turner, Jimmy Thomas, Pat Lewis, Ruby Andrews, Chairmen Of The Board FT Ken Knox, Sidney Barnes, Eddie Holman, Chris Clarke, Gloria Jones, Lorraine Silver and Nolan Porter. We have also worked with Bobby Wilson (son of the late Jackie Wilson), UK singers Paul Stuart Davies and Johnny Boy – they can all regularly be seen on stage with Stefan Taylor, our regular lead vocalist.

Support from:

DANNY TOEMAN
From North London comes the unmistakably soulful sounds of Danny Toeman. With a bombastic and powerful voice reminiscent of Wilson Pickett, and a dynamic stage presence akin to James Brown, Danny is the consummate soul showman. His recent release on LRK Records ‘She’s Got Something About Her’ was an instant hit with the UK soul scene, selling out of vinyl within two months of release. With a string of sold-out headline shows under his belt, and performances alongside the likes of Kool & the Gang, Charles Bradley, and Betty Wright, Danny Toeman is not one to be missed.

JOE STAXX
Staxxy (ex The Smokestax and Shelta) is a Blue Eyed Soul singer like none other! Think of a cross between Otis Redding and Steve Marriott.

DJ TONY "The Professor" DELLAR (Howard Mallett). A legend on the Cambridge Northern Soul scene, he's been there right from the beginning! In the late 1960's the local Sawston Mods used to ride their scooters to the local chip shop for "an evening out". Tony used to arrive on his Vespa SS180 at the end of the evening - returning from places like Yorkshire, having gone record collecting and attending allniters all weekend!
